As far as I know, the missiles work by having a tiny gun that shoots invisible lasers. When they get close enough to you, the laser shoots (damaging you) and then the missile deletes itself. This code was originally written last summer, very quickly to get something working. It would not surprise me if it's quit working properly over the months.

That's actually a really interesting way of doing it to avoid worrying about collision detection.
You could also change missiles from missiles into little lightning plasma balls or something and actually have the shot it takes at you be visible like you got zapped.
Actually, having an enemy projectile that was a slowly floating ball which constantly zapped players within X radius would be a very cool weapon.
